A study has found that we need to drastically cut our greenhouse gas emissions if we want to prevent a multi-century melting of the Earth’s ice sheets and the resulting rise in sea levels.
The study shows that we need to limit human-caused global warming to 1.5°C or less, which is a tough goal that many scientists think is not feasible.
But if we can do it, we can avoid the catastrophic consequences that will come with rising sea levels, such as increased coastal flooding during storms and nuisance flooding during high tides.
The study is based on multiple simulations from computer models that take into account the interactions between the atmosphere, ocean, ice sheets, and ice shelves.
It projects sea level rise through 2150 of between 8 inches and 4.6 feet, and these are likely conservative numbers due to the way the model simulates the sensitivity of the climate to increased greenhouse gas concentrations.
