Coral reefs are facing an uphill battle against climate change and pollution, but some reefs might have a fighting chance to survive for decades to come.
Researchers at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science have discovered that certain tropical Pacific Ocean reefs could maintain high coral cover well into the second half of this century.
How?
By shuffling the symbiotic algae they host, some corals are increasing their heat tolerance and adapting to rising water temperatures.
This is good news, but it’s not a guarantee for long-term survival.
